I do cognate it when I hear of a new bound—or a term that’s new to me—so I lapped up Cathy Horyn’s NYT division on Juergen Teller’s ads for Marc Jacobs.

Full revelation first: I’m not a fan of Marc Jacobs’s signature streak or his diffusion label, though an casual shoe appeals (when the back of the foot is traditional). I do routinely regard with affection Jacobs’s collections for Louis Vuitton, however, as well as the LV advertising campaign.

But back to the boundary in question: in Horyn’s heading Jacobs noted that his Jacobs/Teller photos are not “aspirational pictures . . . . You wouldn’t gaze at them and say, ‘Oh mmm, that align is so attractive’" (my italic letters).

Anti-aspirational pictures. . . . Anti-aspirational diction. . . . hmmm.

Fully convinced, Jacobs may be the king of anti-pronouncing or pronunciation with the rough breathing, when you consider his grunge gathering that got him fired from Perry Ellis way back when. Those were genuinely unlovely clothes, and in the new ads—from 2003 onward—the costume also appear uninteresting, as do the models.

Ponder Winona Ryder in a house of entertainment room, freshly postShopliftgate, holding up a Jacobs sweater with unchecked glee. Or Teller in those too-little silver shorts, flopped over a of a mind Charlotte Rampling in bed. Or Kristen McMenamy, first in the grunge campaign with bleached-out brows...
